Boudoir photography is a growing trend in the UK and is it any surprise? Who wouldn’t want to look gorgeous and glamourous – without having to turn back the clock or go on a strict diet! With the help of fashion celebrities such as Trinny and Susannah and particularly Gok Wan and his TV show ‘How to look good naked’ women are finally learning to appreciate their curves and are finding the confidence to show off the figures that nature gave them.
Boudoir photography should not be confused with the cheesy glamour photography of the 1980s. Nor should it be confused with the stuff you see in men’s magazines. Truly talented boudoir photographers produce works of art. Whether elegant, tasteful nude photography or beautiful lingerie photos… the images should be sensual, classy and flattering regardless of whether women are slim or plus size.
That’s right… we are not talking about women who are young and model thin… women of ALL ages and sizes are seeking out professional boudoir photographers for a variety of reasons.
Typical reasons to have a boudoir photo shoot include:
- A sexy, surprise wedding gift or anniversary present for their husband
- An unusual present for their boyfriend or husband’s birthday or Christmas
- A confidence boost for themselves
- A gift to themselves to celebrate a milestone birthday (e.g. 30, 40, 50)
- A way to record how they look now before they get pregnant and have kids
- An enjoyable fantasy experience way from the humdrum routine or daily life and chores
- A fun and unusual idea for a hen party
Some men will buy a photo shoot as a surprise gift for their girlfriends or wives!
Gemma, a busy working mum booked a boudoir session at an elegant Hertfordshire hotel. A boudoir photo shoot was something that she had been keen to do for some time and decided that as she would soon be getting married a cute little album of glamourous, sexy photos of herself would make the perfect wedding gift to give to her husband-to-be Steve.
Gemma says “Having booked my Boudoir shoot I was very nervous. I am a UK size 14, a mother and I have a body to prove it.” Despite her nerves Gemma really enjoyed her shoot and described her images as “jaw dropping” and that she had no idea she could look so stunning. She also felt that self- confidence rocketed after seeing her photos.
Ruth from Buckinghamshire is also a mum in her 30’s and loved the whole fantasy around dressing up and, in her case transforming in to a 1950’s Hollywood starlet. She says that her boudoir shoot made her “look and feel amazing, gorgeous and sexy” and left her with a feeling of new found body confidence.
She says “I may not have the magazine “perfect” body, but my goodness I felt every inch the 1950’s glamour-puss that is desperate to break out of me!” As a curvy lady who was about to bare all Ruth feels it is very important to have a make-up artist and photographer who are friendly and make you feel at ease.
If the idea of boudoir photo shoots appeal to you then make sure you do your homework. Just as with other areas of photography there is some mediocre and even pretty awful stuff out there posing as boudoir photography by who lack the experience and skills required to pose women correctly and to light them beautifully. If the photographer isn’t showing many photos on their site then that’s probably all they have got so they possibly have very little experience.
So when you visit a photographer’s website look at how many boudoir images they are showing. Also check that it isn’t all just one or two woman. Also make sure that they have experience shooting women of different sizes and ages. If they have a blog check it out to see if they have any recent up-to-date work on there. How do you feel when you look at the photos… do you feel excited and think “Wow! I would love to be shot in this style.” Or do you not feel anything. If the photos don’t move you.. then move on to another site.
If they are much cheaper than other photographers that could possibly mean that they do not value their work very highly and are virtually giving it away. After all would you prefer to have lots of poor quality photos at a cheap price… or would you prefer to pay a bit more and invest in gorgeous photography that make you feel fabulous every time you look at them?
